By siding material
- Wood siding: every 3–7 years

These ranges assume decent-quality paint and a reasonably sun-exposed climate — south and west-facing walls typically fade and wear faster than north-facing ones on the same house.
Signs it's due regardless of the calendar
- Visible fading or chalking (a powdery residue when you run your hand across it)
- Cracking, peeling, or bubbling paint
- Bare wood showing through in any spots
- Caulking around windows and trim that's cracked or pulling away
Why this isn't just cosmetic
Paint is a weather barrier, not just a color choice. Once it fails, the siding underneath is exposed to moisture, which leads to rot on wood siding and can allow water intrusion behind other siding types entirely. Addressing peeling paint early is meaningfully cheaper than addressing the water damage that follows it.
